Goodies Digest 003
my phone is gently buckling under the weight of pending checkouts and Love Story edits
hiihihii,
I hope everyone had a good, fulfilling week. I’ve been knocked down and kicked out by a mysterious upper respiratory infection that has become flu-y? I’m not entirely sure, but the Z-pack and steroids have me on an acetaminophen-adjacent high that’s compelling me to shop. Medically, I have no choice but to submit to it. Luckily for you: fresh tabs, pending carts, trailblazing inspiration, and the occasional 1/1 find. Let’s dive in.

Show of the Week
Like everyone else, I’m paralyzed by the rollout of American Royalty that is the weekly episodes of Love Story. But the whole buzz around it has got me thinking… and I have a couple of things to say. About two years ago I read Once Upon a Time, CBK’s biography. It was around a similar time I read Champagne Supernovas. (Kate Moss, Marc Jacobs, Alexander McQueen, and the ‘90s Renegades Who Remade Fashion). Which is where I first heard of Carolyn Bessette, as she was honored as the one who hand selected Kate Moss and swiftly launched her career in a pivotal Calvin Klein campaign. In terms of her biography, I was shocked at how honest and openly critical it was. I can’t even lie, the show is mesmerizing. It makes me want to survive on Vogue (the magazine and cigarettes simultaneously). When I’m watching it I want to toss all color and pattern from my repertoire and commit to life of turtlenecks and restraint. The soundtrack, the framing, everything.
But my frustration lies here in the amalgamation of romanticizing edits I’ve seen online. Because when you actually sit with what’s been written about her, when you contrast that with the videos set to American Wedding by Frank Ocean… they starts to feel like a projection more than a person. I’m just saying… I’m not sure you’re going to like black turtlenecks and headbands in a few months. And I’m positive CBK wouldn’t change her entire closet based off of one season of a TV show. I think it’s watching a confident, hardworking woman, with an amazing job at a historic fashion house, navigate a romantic life where she’s not plagued by a cell phone. Her confidence is magnetic, her certainty is intoxicating, her wardrobe is timeless. If you’ve been devoted to 90s minimalism long before it had a Love Story soundtrack, consider this your quiet victory lap. You were early and right!! So let the show inspire you, but don’t feel the pressure to order 5 black shirts and a midi skirt just to keep up with a cultural cycle. Be you, authentically. Soak up inspiration and nostalgia, develop your taste and strengthen your shopping discernment. It’s a wonderful show, but it doesn’t mean you have to buy a whole new wardrobe.

Love your note to stay authentic and not flock to trends (and how you expressed it was spot on) re: Love Story. Who only knows what the next fad to mesmerize us will be.. xx
