HHG Goodies is 1!
Happy Sunday and Happy 1st Birthday to this Substack! Here’s your gentle nudge to celebrate the wins big and small. Editors note: *can I even cele one year if I had an 8 month hiatus??* Let me set the Sunday stage: post everything shower, tennis on the TV, candle burning, Sunday rot, Mom on FaceTime. I tell her about our farmers market morning and my plan for the rest of the day. To which she kindly slides in “you really need to write from the heart on your next Substack.” Without further ado, a Sunday Situations from the heart awaits you.
What better way to cele 1 year anniversary of Goodies than to deep dive into its origin? While my crippling nostalgia frequently (everyday) leads me astray, today I look back on the past year of this publication with a deep appreciation, reflect on the love that keeps my head above water, and mull over (translation- attempt not to spiral over) all the changes in this little life of mine since I started oversharing on Substack a year ago.

Let’s Regroup-
In my introductory post, I unpacked why I chose to name this “Goodies.” If you missed it - “Everything is good in moderation. I think we have lost sight of our sense of goodness, gumption, joy, contentment in our overstimulation. This (Substack) will serve to illuminate goodies in my life — people, places, play, precious objects (clearly I’m partial to alliteration).” Ohhhh boy should I have read my own words sooner. I feel a bit like a hypocrite reflecting on these couple of sentences, due in part to the fact that I did indeed lose sight of ALL of those things, due in full to the fact that I purposely fostered a certain overstimulation so as to not acknowledge that I was growing more and more despondent.

Do you ever read something that alters how you move about the rest of your day? your week? your life? That was me, last week, reading the following: “when people lose their balance, that is the most interesting thing they could do.” It was equal parts validating and humbling. I’ve come to learn its about how you get back up after losing your balance. It’s about moving towards something, tenderizing and empathizing instead of distracting and hardening. Obviouslyyyyy I can only say this now after I’ve both distracted and hardened my heart. So from now on I’ll be going back to why I started this Substack in the first place to “illuminate goodies in my life — people, places, play, precious objects.”
